About the Spirits of the Limestone Series Lemont’s History Has a Haunted Side Since 2019, the Lemont Area Historical Society’s Spirits of the Limestone series has explored the ghost stories, local legends, unexplained encounters, and darker chapters of Lemont’s history. With more than 175 years of history, Lemont has accumulated plenty of stories. Tales of unexplained footsteps inside historic buildings, mysterious figures that appear and disappear, strange happenings in former businesses, legends surrounding the quarries and the Bowl, and encounters with some of Lemont’s more unusual folklore have been shared for generations. Spirits of the Limestone brings those stories to life while preserving the history behind them. Over the years, the series has taken many forms, including downtown ghost walks, guided tours, paranormal investigations, demonstrations of ghost-hunting equipment, theatrical programs, interactive events, and special presentations inside some of Lemont’s historic buildings. Some stories come from documented events in Lemont’s past. Others have been shared by residents, business owners, Historical Society volunteers, and visitors who experienced something they could not explain. Still others belong firmly to local folklore. We think all three are worth preserving. Whenever possible, Spirits of the Limestone explores what is known about the people, places, and events behind a story while making a distinction between documented history, reported experiences, and folklore. We may not be able to tell you whether Lemont’s ghosts are real, but we can tell you why their stories have survived. And sometimes the history behind a ghost story turns out to be even more fascinating than the ghost. More Than Ghost Stories At its heart, Spirits of the Limestone is a different way to experience local history. Ghost stories can introduce us to people whose names have nearly disappeared from the historical record. They lead us into old churches, businesses, homes, quarries, streets, and gathering places and give us a reason to ask what happened there before us. They also preserve another kind of history: the stories Lemont residents have told one another. Whether you come for the history, the mystery, the paranormal investigation, or simply a good ghost story, Spirits of the Limestone invites you to discover a side of Lemont you may not have encountered before. Each year brings something different, so even returning guests never know exactly what might be waiting. Come for the history. Stay for the ghosts. 🪦 Downtown Lemont Ghost Story Walk
12:30–2:00 PM | $20 Meet at the Metra Train Station Lot Take a walk through historic downtown Lemont and discover the darker side of familiar streets and buildings. We’ll share local ghost stories, strange encounters, unexplained happenings, and the real history behind some of the places you may pass every day. Some stories are creepy. Some are tragic. And some may make you look at downtown Lemont a little differently the next time you’re there after dark. Please note: This experience includes walking outdoors through downtown Lemont. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. 👻 Voices from the Old Stone Church Evidence, Equipment & Hands-On Paranormal Investigation 3:00–5:00 PM | $20 Join Nicole Tito from Ghostly-Voices.com, to learn about paranormal devices and methods, and listen to actual evidence collected during previous investigations of the Old Stone Church. Then, you'll have the opportunity to investigate the Old Stone Church using a variety of paranormal tools to explore this location and see what you might uncover. See ghost hunting equipment in action, try different methods of spirit communication, and discover firsthand how paranormal investigators attempt to document the unexplained. 🎙️ Dead Air A Live 1930s–40s-Style Mock Radio Show 6:00–8:00 PM | $20 The microphones are hot. The phone lines are open. Some of our callers may be… spirited. Step inside the historic Old Stone Church for Dead Air, an original live theatrical performance staged as a vintage 1930s–40s radio show and inspired by Lemont’s own ghost stories, folklore, and haunted history. WLMT’s host, Rex Rattlebones, takes “calls” from around Lemont as local characters share tales of ghostly soldiers, haunted restaurants, mysterious creatures, unexplained voices, and some of the legends that have been passed down through generations. Expect vintage microphones, callers, sound effects, comedy, local history, and plenty of things that go bump in the night. But as the program continues, Rex may discover that not everyone calling into the show is part of the performance. Dead Air is a theatrical mock radio broadcast performed live for the audience. It will not be broadcast over the radio or aired live online. ☎️ The lines are open. Answer carefully. 👻 Want the Full Haunted Experience? Why choose? Start the afternoon wandering the haunted streets of downtown Lemont, head inside the Old Stone Church to explore paranormal investigation, then return that evening as part of the studio audience for Dead Air.
