During July, members of the Lemont Area Historical Society created an exhibit on the main floor of the Old Stone Church so that it would be handicapped accessible. Looking at our collections we decided to concentrate on just three local artists. Gathering information from Newspapers.com we wrote three short biographies of the artists. Recently, LAHA had shared over 100 microfilm local newspaper rolls with Newspapers.com

Lee Anderson
Laverne “Lee” Anderson (1884-1970). A recipient of the Studs Terkel Humanitarian Award, Lee helped to preserve Lemont’s history and natural areas. He regularly took people on historic hikes to share the knowledge of Lemont’s portion of the Illinois and Michigan (I & M) Canal. Born along McCarthy Road in an area called Blue Hill, later he trained hunting dogs in fields which are now known as McCarthy Point. As a young man who fished and hunted, he became a self-taught wood carver who was proud of his ability to carve birds with meticulous detail. Our display has many of these, and we especially hope you enjoy his American bald eagle carvings. |
